The Biobank of the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (IDIBAPS) is a platform that works to obtain, store, manage and distribute large collections of human biological samples of phenotypes or diseases of significant interest for research. It is organised into the Neurological Tissue Bank, the Tumour and Anatomical Pathology Bank and the Blood Sample and Other Fluids Bank.
The Biobank's Neurological Tissue Bank contains a store of nervous tissue that is maintained by donations from deceased patients with or without neurological disease. Today this fund has more than 1,000 brain and spinal cord tissues with a wide range of neurological diseases.
The Biobank's Tumour and Anatomical Pathology Bank contains a store of nearly one million samples, including tumour tissues from patients suffering from cancer and other diseases. It also stores normal tissues of different organs, tissue matrices and more than 100,000 fixed and paraffin-embedded tissue blocks.
The Blood Sample and Other Fluids Bank aims at analysing the genetic and molecular changes involved in disease progression, assessing the efficacy of new drugs and applying concrete therapeutic methods for specific population groups. The main projects the Biobank works on include metabolism disorders, inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal and pancreatic cancer, psychiatric disorders and maternal-foetal medicine.
